Our Trustees

Phil Ashford

I started as a trustee at Furniture Now (FN) in 2009 and became the Chair in 2011. I have a background in business and have worked in the public sector, (Business Link, University of Brighton) and private sector (Panasonic) in everything from Director level to business development. I joined FN as I saw an organisation that had so much potential in helping others and protecting the environment. It has been a privilege to see the charity grow and help more and more people in the local area during tough times. I now run my own social enterprise, Enterprise Exchange, helping ex -offenders and the unemployed into self employment. I am looking forward to a great new era for the Now Charity.

James Williams

I live in Lewes and became a Trustee in 2012. For me, being a Trustee an opportunity to use the skills I’ve built up over my career to serve an organisation making a real impact for people locally and the environment. In my day job, I’m Deputy Chief Executive of In Kind Direct, a national charity which redistributes surplus products donated by companies to support thousands of good causes across the UK.

Andrew Walker

I was born and educated in Hertfordshire and have worked in sales since the late 70s. Setting up a telecoms company, Cavendish Communications Ltd, in 1990, I took semi-retirement in 2014.

I have been hugely impressed with the work the Now Charity does and I saw becoming a trustee as an opportunity to apply the skills and experience I have gained in business to help improve the lives of others. I am married with three children and live in Hellingly. A keen fisherman, I enjoy travelling to remote parts of the World in pursuit of my obsession.

Serena May

I am the Owner/Director of the HR Dept Eastbourne and a Chartered member of the Institute of Personnel and Development. Working in Human Resources for over 15 years, advising on people management issues and problems, I have always been interested in helping and supporting individuals in the workplace to achieve their full potential. I was delighted to join the Now Charity Group as a Trustee in early 2015.

Carmen Appich

I have worked in the public and community sectors in finance roles all of my working life. I came across the charity through my work with East Sussex Credit Union, and was impressed with its mission and vision. I aim to offer my experience and skills to make a positive difference to the way the charity manages its finances.

John Timbs

Having founded Lodge Group in 2000 and prior to that working in senior management positions in inner city Local Authority’s in London my career has been spent working with difficult to reach and engage vulnerable groups including homelessness, 16/17 year old care leavers, NEET young people, children and adults with Learning Disabilities and more. It was an easy decision for me to make when invited onto the Board of Trustees at Now Charity Group to bring my experience in supporting them with the fantastic work they do in reaching out to the people of East Sussex

Gordon Sims

As a Trustee I am delighted to be involved in The Now Charity Group and the brilliant work it does in helping to alleviated poverty in Sussex. I have 25 years management experience, including 8 years as a Senior Manager. I have been an independent HR and training consultant helping businesses improve through people for over 11 years. I am also a former Chair of a not for profit housing management company, and am currently a governor at Seaford Head Academy.

Penelope Parker

Penelope Parker used to live in Lewes and was a frequent customer at Furniture Now! before learning more about the charity’s work in training and recycling. Wishing to take part in promoting the charity’s goals she joined the board in 2012 and as a member of the Marketing Committee is very pleased to have been involved in their rebranding as the Now Charity.

Penelope’s career has mainly been within the charity sector in marketing and publicity, fundraising development and events with responsibilities for social media, web development, promotion and design and brings her knowledge, enthusiasm and commitment to the board.
